Here’s the second entry in our series where our team at Mulholland features their own bag and what they carry every day in it.
Danielle is our operations manager and she carries a waxed canvas Angler’s bag in olive/stout.
“In my Angler’s bag from left to right:
- Umbrella for the occasional San Francisco rainfall.
- Olive Business Card Wallet.
- iPad 2 that I primarily use for reading and emailing on the go.
- Notebook for well, taking notes.
- Earbuds for taking phone calls in the car.
- Valet Key Chain.
- Urbanears Plattan Headphones, great for drowning out the noise on the subway.
- Nikon D90 because I never know when I’ll stumble upon my next great photo adventure.”

Way of Life: The Wet Shave
June 8th, 2011. Published under Road Trip Way of Life. 6 Comments.
Way of Life is our new feature covering tips for living every day like a road trip.
Living in our modern world means that many things have changed for the better: our gasoline is unleaded and our televisions are in high-def. But some things have changed for the worse: that gasoline isn’t 25 cents a gallon anymore and the only thing on those high-def TVs is infomercials. One tiny thing you can rescue from the jaws of modernity is the fine art of the wet shave.
First, you’ll need the right tools:
- A proper shave kit You’re going to need something substantial to keep all of your shaving swag safe from the elements. I think our all leather flat shave kit is the best you can buy (Ed: so much so that we’re giving one away for Father’s Day, see next post), but you can see our full range here.
- A safety razor No laser-guided, multi-blade contraption here. I use a Merkur razor from Germany. Merkur is old school – they don’t even have a website and it’s identical to the Gillette my grandfather used. The best part is that you can forever jettison disposable cartridges: the blades last about seven shaves and are dirt cheap.
- The brush This is the real kicker here. Get one made of badger hair – it’s the best quality. Be careful, though. Some aren’t cleansed and you may need to boil your brush before your first use to get the badger funk out.
- Shave cream and aftershave I urge restraint here; nothing froo froo. I hew more to the no-scent or subtle stuff and avoid anything with paraben or alcohol as they dry your skin out.
Then, the follow through:
- Shave wet Ideally, right out of the shower.
- Shave close On your first pass, follow the grain of your beard. On the second, go perpendicular or diagonal to the grain. Finally, go against the grain for barber shop closeness.
- Control temperatures Use the hottest water your faucet will give out initially, but use cold water to rinse the blade. Hot water expands the razor, increasing the size of imperfections. When you’re finished, splash cold water on your face to shrink the capillaries down to size and reduce irritation and any bleeding.
- Styptic matches These are great for stemming any bloodletting and much more sanitary than the traditional pencil.
Let us know how your shaving adventures turn out.
SFMade Week wrap-up
June 4th, 2011. Published under Road Trip Way of Life. 10 Comments.

Mulholland was lucky enough to take part in the first annual SFMade week from 21 May – 28 May. All week, local manufacturers were featured in their resplendent glory. Several companies organized tours of their factories and you could shop at over thirty retailers carrying locally produced goods.
To kick off the event, twenty-one manufacturers shared their wares at a pop-up shop in San Francisco’s hip Mission District. I manned our booth all Saturday and showed off our locally-made goods: High & Mighty bags and iPad sleeves, deerskin bags, and for the first time, our upcoming line of bison bags and accessories.
There were quite a range of range of goods to shop in addition to our leather luxury goods: greeting cards, jewelry, and flannel shirts to name a few. You could feel SFMade’s motto “Yes, we still make things right here in San Francisco!” come to life.
Stay tuned for more about the bison bags; they’re rugged, stylish, and true American originals.
